Olhão

Over the last 20 years, Olhão has grown from a small and simple fishing village to become a municipal town of financial, social and urban importance. While maintaining its roots and the influences of the sea and of fishing, because these were after all the activities that boosted the economic growth of the area and still characterise it, it is an increasingly important location in the Algarve. Its population (40 808 inhabitants in 2001, according to the INE) makes Olhão a focus of interest for both investors, for whom the town is an opportunity for growth and new ventures, and families, who are attracted by its quality of life, services and infrastructures. The attractions are obvious. Avenida da República, the old symbol of development and prosperity from the early twentieth century, favoured by the families of wealthy industrialists and traders, still maintains its style of urban development reflected in the continuous use of its potential for quality homes. The town now has excellent infrastructures and services: 17 schools (from primary to secondary); football pitches (5), tennis courts (3), stadiums (2), gymnasiums (4), sports centres (16), municipal swimming pools and athletics track, reflecting the municipality's clear investment in sport; an Internet Space, open to all residents, aimed increasing the use and knowledge of new technologies; eight pharmacies throughout the municipality; the transport network includes trains, buses and, of course, boats to the islands (Culatra, Armona and Farol) available to all local residents. Two unique facilities have been opened in Olhão united by the aim of developing the municipality. The Ecoteca Museum, part of the national network of Ecotecas, which encourage debate on environmental issues among the population, in an attempt to mobilise and create, if possible, action at a local level; the focal point in this case is the geographic location and environmental involvement of the town with the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The setting up of a BIC – Business Innovation Centre reflects the importance of and desire for greater economic development in the area, by offering support for entrepreneurship and innovation.
